Using Directories To Get BacklinksFirst you need to understand what a directory is. A directory is a place on the internet where you can submit your link and supposedly get a backlink to your site. Most of them accept submissions from anyone, and any type of site can be submitted. A directory can contain links to every known website on the world wide web. This can include, porn, hate, illegal or other sites that you may not want associated with your site. The benefit of using directories is that you get to submit your link to thousands of them. A person could really submit a lot of these on a daily basis and get a lot of one way links back to their website. Well in days gone by, that was the case. Search engines are smarter now and they can sniff out potentially spammy submissions, and have also devalued or de-ranked the value of the site as a whole, making the directories less appealing from a backlinking stand point. The search engines seem to flag directories as ‘ffa’ or ‘free for all’, where anything goes and there are no checks or bounds on the types of submissions being submitted. Many find success using directories, but as with anything, you really need to pay attention to where your links are coming from, so as to not de-rank your own site. We currently don’t advocate the use of directories in our backlinking strategy.
